Jacob Wool Yarn
Farm Fresh Maine Raised All Natural Yarn
This yarn is 100% jacob wool from our own Maine raised flock. It is available in sport and worsted weights. The yarn is a soft grey, created by the blending of black and white wool. Jacob is a medium type wool, with a nice spring to the fiber. 2 ply Worsted Weight Yarn is approx 4 oz/260 yards and the Sport Weight Yarn is approx 4 oz/ 470 yards
Our jacob sheep are selected for excellent fleece quality and their wool is always in demand by hand spinners. Now, we have 100% jacob yarn for knitting, crochet, weaving, and other fiber arts. Jacob sheep are a very hardy heritage sheep breed. They are a smaller breed with striking black and white coloring. They are known for their four horns, but also come in a two horned variation. We have both two and four horned jacobs and love them all.
This listing is for the natural grey yarn. These skeins qualify for the Livestock Conservancy’s Shave ‘Em to Save ‘Em program, which supports farms raising heritage and threatened breeds. Please ask for a passport sticker in the comments at checkout, if you are participating in this program.
When it is overdyed, the individual colors in the jacob wool take up the dye differently, giving a nice heathered effect that can be almost irridescent in bright light. We have had a wonderful time experimenting in the dye kitchen with our jacob skeins, but please note these skeins are naturally colored.
These skeins are 4 ounces each and approximately 470 yards. This is a two ply yarn, created for us by the wonderful folks at Green Mountain Spinnery in Vermont.
